About Horace Andy – Better Collie Mixed By The Scientist

Horace Andy (a.k.a. Better Collie) – Reggae Vocal Icon

Horace Andy, affectionately known as Better Collie, is one of Jamaica’s most distinctive and enduring voices in reggae music. Born Horace Hinds on February 19, 1951, in Kingston, Jamaica, he gained early recognition in the 1970s for his hauntingly soulful vocals and poignant lyrics that stood out even in reggae's golden era. His stage name, Horace Andy, pays homage to Bob Andy, another legendary figure in Jamaican music.

Horace Andy’s nickname "Better Collie" comes from his 1975 roots anthem of the same name, a track that celebrated the herbal culture intrinsic to Rastafarian and reggae traditions. The song became a street favorite and helped cement his reputation not only as a unique vocalist but also as a cultural voice for his generation.

He first rose to prominence with hits like "Skylarking," "You Are My Angel," and "Love of a Woman," working with influential producers such as Coxsone Dodd at Studio One and Bunny Lee. Andy’s ability to blend romantic themes with conscious lyrics set him apart, and his falsetto-laced vocal style made him instantly recognizable.

In the 1990s and beyond, Horace Andy reached a new generation of fans through his long-standing collaboration with British trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack. He contributed vocals to several of their seminal albums, including Blue Lines, Protection, and Mezzanine, adding a deep reggae soul to their futuristic soundscapes.

Despite his international success, Horace Andy has remained true to his roots, continuing to record reggae and dub tracks that reflect the social, spiritual, and emotional themes that have always defined his work. Known for his humility and sincerity, Horace Andy—Better Collie to his longtime fans—remains a vital and respected figure in global music, bridging generations with a voice that still resonates with truth and power.
