About LLOYD PARKS - Officially Mixed By The Scientist

Lloyd Parks: The Cornerstone of the Reggae Groove

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Lloyd Parks is one of the most prolific and influential figures in reggae history. As a dual-threat vocalist and master bassist, his career spans the evolution of the genre—from the rocksteady era of the late 1960s to the roots and dub movements of the 1970s and beyond.

Parks first gained recognition as one half of the rocksteady duo The Termites at Studio One, but he truly defined his legacy behind the bass guitar. He was a foundational member of several legendary house bands, including Skin, Flesh and Bones, The Professionals (Joe Gibbs), and The Revolutionaries (Channel One). In 1974, he founded the We the People Band, an elite ensemble that served as the backbone for Dennis Brown for over two decades and remains a staple of international reggae festivals.

The Scientist Connection: "Officially" Mixed

While Parks is a maestro of the "live" rhythm, his work reached new heights through the mixing console of The Scientist. This collaboration represents the perfect marriage of a disciplined, rock-solid rhythm section and the experimental, "under-the-hood" sonic manipulation that The Scientist pioneered at King Tubby’s and Channel One.

When a Lloyd Parks production is "Officially Mixed by The Scientist," the standard reggae groove is transformed. The Scientist applies his signature techniques to Parks’ deep, melodic basslines, utilizing:

  • Slew Rate & Transient Clarity: Ensuring Parks’ heavy bass transients cut through the mix with surgical precision.

  • Spatial Dub Artistry: Taking Parks' hits—like "Officially" or "Mafia"—and expanding them into three-dimensional soundscapes with feedback echoes and resonant filtering.

  • Headroom Optimization: Utilizing high-voltage signal paths to preserve the natural warmth of the live instrumentation while pushing the dub effects to the limit.

Key Highlights

  • Signature Hits: "Slaving," "Mafia," and "Officially."

  • The Foundation: As a bassist, Parks has backed everyone from The Abyssinians to Culture and John Holt.

  • Sonic Legacy: The "Officially Mixed by The Scientist" versions of his tracks are considered essential listening for audiophiles, showcasing the peak of 1980s Jamaican dub engineering.

"Music is not a stop and start thing," Parks often says. In the hands of The Scientist, that music becomes an infinite, echoing journey.
