There are different ways to approach a mix depending on what the music needs.
Mix by Parameter: Using the EQ to set the dynamic levels and space. This is what I used on the mix for Marcia Griffiths’ "Woman of the Ghetto," carving out frequencies to control how the instruments step forward or sit back.
Mix by Dynamic Touch: Letting the natural playing volume and velocity of the musicians dictate the final blend.
Mix by Formation: Setting the fader levels based on a deliberate structural layout—like positioning the bass guitar slightly above the kick drum, with the snare sitting just below it.
Every technique has its place depending on the situation.
