My strategy on this mix was all about using aggressive EQ filtering to carve out strict boundaries. I filtered the low end out of the rhythm guitars and keys so the bass line could live purely in the sub frequencies without any competition. Then I shaped the midrange so Cornell’s falsetto vocals stayed clean on top without getting swallowed by the instrumentation.
By carving these hard boundaries with EQ, you create the actual space. Once every instrument has its own clean frequency pocket, then panning, delays, or reverbs actually work without washing out the track. Space isn't born in the pan pot. It is carved in the frequency spectrum.
