Joseph Cotton, also known as Jah Walton (born, 1957, St. Ann, Jamaica), is a Jamaican reggae deejay who has been a prominent figure in the reggae scene since the mid-1970s.
Cotton's journey into music began after a brief stint in the Jamaican police force. He started recording in 1976, initially working with Joe Gibbs under the name Jah Walton. He later moved to Harry Mudie, where he recorded popular tracks such as "Stay a Yard and Praise God," "Touch Her Where She Want It Most," and "Married To A Bank Cashier."
In the mid-1980s, he began recording under the name Joseph Cotton and achieved significant success in the United Kingdom with "No Touch the Style." This hit led to a television appearance on Channel 4's Club Mix program in 1987.
Cotton became a figurehead of the dancehall scene, where the deejay took precedence over the old-school singers. He continued to release music throughout the 1990s and beyond, collaborating with various artists and producers. His work has been sampled by artists like Drake, and he has toured Europe with the Blood & Fire sound system.
Joseph Cotton, nicknamed "The Best Dressed Jamaican In Town," has been living in France for many years. He remains an active and respected figure in the reggae music industry.
